Palestinians are both Muslim and Christian

While the majority of Palestinians are Muslim, historic Palestine used to have a significant minority of Christians, who at one point comprised about 10% of the population. In the years since the establishment of the State of Israel however, the Christian population has dwindled through both expulsion and emigration. Today, Christians represent less than 2% of the Palestinians in the occupied territories. Most Palestinian Christians are members of the Orthodox Church, followed by Roman Catholics, Anglicans and Lutherans.  Rev. Munther Isaac spoke movingly about Gaza in his “Christ under the rubble” sermon, delivered from his West Bank pulpit in December, 2024. In months before his death, Pope Francis called a Catholic Church in Gaza frequently to check on his flock there, and even mentioned Gaza in his final Easter sermon in 2025.
