Deliberate Disinformation

During the Gaza War, there have been at least two instances of investments made to influence public perception of the conflict in the Middle East. In June 2025, Google reportedly signed a contract for $45M to support Israeli propaganda, including displaying ads on YouTube and Google claiming that “There is food in Gaza,” a contradiction of the reports of major UN and international bodies that have declared a famine in the enclave.  In the same year, Project Esther, an initiative of the conservative Heritage Foundation, was billed as a strategy to battle antisemitism on college campuses. However, it was developed without the involvement of Jewish groups, and seeks to target left leaning groups by smearing them as terrorists or as members of a “Hamas network.” This “terrorist” labeling in turn enables a variety of other legal actions that would not be acceptable to the majority of Americans.
