Suppressing Dissent

Suppressing Dissent

Dissent against military action in Gaza, or promotion of any positive framing of Palestinian rights, has been met with suppression. Tactics of this suppression differ,  but they have been employed for decades. Common tactics of those suppressing dissent include:

  1. Structural suppression by heavy-handed intervention of well-positioned pro-Israeli voices in senior positions in government, academia, business and other forums
  2. Smearing through labels such as “terrorist,” “Hamas,” “antisemite,” etc. using doxing or other means in order to discredit those who support Palestinian rights.
  3. Carrying out political or professional retaliation by acting to remove people from their employment or other position of authority.

Examples

  1. Structural Suppression: Examples include the American Historical Association incident, anti-BDS campaigns, promotion of the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism
  2. Smearing: Examples include the Ms. Rachel controversy, Doxing of student protesters, campaigns against Francesca Albanese, United Nations,
  3. Professional Retaliation: Examples include Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, rescinded job offers, firings, and earlier incidents (See “They Dared to Speak Out”)
